Vol 3 Issue 1
[ANIME REVIEWS]

Dragon Slayer
The story is classic fantasy: a peaceful kingdom is taken over by a demonic tyrant. The king is killed, but his young son escapes with one of the knights. Of course, as the child grows up, he swears vengeance for his father and vows to free the land he is destined to rule.
After rescuing a town from one of the evil Ackdam's demon lords, Prince Sirius and his mentor Rias are confronted by Zagi, Ackdam's right-hand demon, who can polymorph into an enormous dragon. During the fight, Rias is killed, and Sirius is captured and taken to the castle. There, after being imprisoned and promised death by Ackdam, he is shocked to learn that his mother is still alive.
After breaking out of the castle, he joins the rebel forces which are grossly underpowered for any kind of confrontation. However, Ackdam forces the issue by declaring he'll execute the Queen if Sirius doesn't surrender to him. Sirius, joined by Sonia, goes after a secret weapon that will help him in the coming battle. But this ancient weapon has a potentially irreversible price.

The story is above average as far as the genre goes, and it manages to mix in a fair amount of fighting, magic, and actual plot. However, sometimes the pacing seems rushed. It seems as if Sirius accomplishes everything in the video in just a few hours rather than days.
Although the original copyright is listed as 1992, it feels much older. In fact, probably the biggest problem with this video is that the animation seems so flat and uninteresting much of the time. Some scenes, including the special effects, are well animated and well planned, but other portions lack the same energy found in these scenes. And sometimes the cuts between scenes appears rather choppy. Of course, these are minor quibbles, and while they don't really detract from the story, they prevent it from being truly engrossing.
The voice acting in the dub is decent, although sometimes the voice of Sonia seems to try a little too hard and comes off sounding somewhat wooden. Matt Miller once again takes a lead role and performs the voice of Sirius, which isn't necessarily bad, but I couldn't help noticing how similar Sirius sounded to Prettz from FINAL FANTASY.
All in all, there really isn't much left to say about this title. From the ending, it appears certain that there are more episodes to follow, otherwise it is a very open-ended conclusion. Fans of fantasy anime should give this title a look. It's worthwhile, but it is not a blockbuster.
